The Labour Party's presidential candidate during the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, voiced concerns on Tuesday regarding what he termed a "troubling" event within Nigeria's democratic landscape following the detainment of a cleric who had recently welcomed him in Kaduna State.

Obi took to his X (formerly Twitter) account early Tuesday to inform the public that Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, the religious leader in question, was taken into custody by authorities shortly after Obi's visit to Kaduna on Sunday.

"I was just made aware this morning that the esteemed religious leader, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, has been arrested by authorities right after he hosted me in Kaduna on Sunday," Obi mentioned in his post.

The former governor of Anambra State labeled the incident as a representation of the deteriorating standards for civil liberties, highlighting the potential threat it poses to Nigeria's democratic values if not resolved promptly.

"This situation emphasizes the deeply alarming state of our nation and democracy, signifying that freedom of speech and movement is progressively under threat, and citizens or perceived political adversaries face harassment and unwarranted persecution. Such practices must not be tolerated," he added.

Obi underscored the necessity of protecting fundamental freedoms within a democratic framework, calling for authorities to abide by the rule of law in engagements with citizens.

"This country must safeguard freedom and free expression, which are the cornerstones of any democratic society. Any form of suppression or intimidation of dissent is incompatible with democracy, and this Nigerian government must acknowledge this reality," he further emphasized.

He urged relevant authorities to avoid actions that could weaken democratic institutions.

"I earnestly appeal to all individuals intent on undermining our already fragile democracy to cease their actions and adhere to the rule of law and democratic principles when interacting with citizens," Obi stated.

As of the time of this report, there had been no official comment from the authorities regarding the arrest or the surrounding circumstances.
