On Monday, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate from the Labour Party for the 2023 elections, visited the Singer Market in Kano. His visit aimed to express his sympathy towards the traders who faced devastating losses due to a recent fire that destroyed goods valued in the millions of naira.
During his visit, Obi conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the victims, emphasizing that the incident was a significant setback not only for Kano State but for Nigeria as a whole.
“Let me begin by expressing my sincere sympathy to the leadership of this facility regarding what has transpired. We are here in person to witness the aftermath of the fire at Singer Market and the extensive losses sustained by the traders,” said Obi.
He pointed out that the market is crucial for job creation, highlighting how the fire had disrupted numerous livelihoods in the area.
“This is a tremendous loss to both Kano and Nigeria since many individuals derive their income from this market. I made the trip from Lagos personally to show my solidarity with the victims,” he continued.
Jamilu Muhammad Zakari, the Chairman of the Singer Market Development Association, spoke on behalf of the affected traders, expressing gratitude to Obi for his visit and his show of support.
“We appreciate your concern and the effort you made to travel from Lagos to sympathize with us. It was a tragic event, and we are thankful for your assistance,” Zakari remarked. Obi also made a contribution of an undisclosed amount to aid the market leadership in supporting the affected traders.
