Gunmen on Monday night fatally shot a 300-level student of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, in Dum Village, Bachi District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The victim, identified as 29-year-old Badung Sunday Alamba, was attacked when the assailants, who had positioned themselves at the village entrance, opened fire on him and another young man from the community. The other individual managed to escape the attack unharmed.
Sources from the community indicate that the deceased was the sole child of his mother.
Mr. Dung Elisha, a community member, confirmed to journalists that Alamba was his mother's only child.
Dachomo Habila, the deceased's companion, narrowly escaped the attack. Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders- Association (BYM), confirmed the incident, strongly condemning it as a "premeditated, calculated and barbaric assault on innocent civilians."
Tengwong stated that the attackers specifically targeted Berom communities located in Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South Local Government Areas.
He urged security agencies to conduct a swift and comprehensive investigation into the killing, to apprehend and bring the perpetrators and their financiers to justice without delay.
The BYM spokesman also appealed to security operatives to enhance surveillance and protection measures in vulnerable communities that have been repeatedly subjected to attacks.
Attempts to get a comment from the Plateau State Police Command's spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
