The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) in Lagos has arrested three individuals believed to be involved in a cyber blackmail and extortion scheme.

As per the unit's spokesperson, DSP Ovie Ewhubare, these suspects allegedly gain access to their victims' explicit photographs and subsequently threaten to publish them unless a ransom is paid.

The suspects, comprising two males and one female, were apprehended following a complaint lodged by a victim who reported being persistently threatened by unknown parties demanding money.

"The victim received numerous phone calls from individuals who threatened to make her nude photographs public if she did not comply with their demands for payment. Driven by fear and emotional stress, she transferred money to the suspects. The situation escalated when they requested an additional N10 million, which prompted her to seek police assistance," he stated.

The police official indicated that upon receiving the victim's report, the Commissioner of Police for the PSFU, Mr. Kayode Ojapinwa, ordered an immediate investigation.

"The investigation resulted in the arrests of the three suspects. Findings indicated that one of the suspects unlawfully accessed the victim’s mobile device, transferring her nude photographs to his own device. Further investigations revealed that he conspired with the other suspects and accomplices who remain at large to continually extort money from the victim in several amounts," he revealed.

Currently, the suspects are in police custody and are anticipated to be brought before a court of law.

The police image-maker confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional members of the syndicate and recover the profits from their alleged criminal activities.
