President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were swiftly removed from the White House Correspondents' Dinner after shots were heard outside the event hall.
Both American leaders are reported to be unharmed. The individual responsible for firing the shots has been identified and taken into custody, President Trump later confirmed.
According to President Trump, the assailant was carrying several firearms.
Officials have identified the suspect as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old individual residing in Los Angeles, who was employed as both a teacher and a video game developer.
Security personnel were seen escorting President Trump from the stage during the event, with footage showing him stumbling briefly as he was hurried away.
The motive behind the shooting remains unconfirmed at this time. The suspect was reportedly a guest at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where the dinner was taking place.
Jeffery Carroll, the Interim Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, indicated in a press briefing late Saturday that initial findings suggest the individual was a hotel guest. This was reported by CNN.
