Recent surveillance footage has documented the precise moment an Oklahoma high school principal was wounded in the leg while engaging an armed assailant who infiltrated the school.

Kirk Moore, the principal at Pauls Valley High School, is being lauded by his community for his courageous actions that are credited with preventing a greater tragedy and saving students' lives.

The individual responsible for the intrusion, identified as 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins, reportedly carried two semi-automatic handguns into the school's main entrance. This information was confirmed by NBC News.

The video, which lasts 48 seconds, shows Principal Moore emerging from behind a partition and engaging the gunman, taking him down onto a bench as students in the vicinity fled the scene.

According to investigators, upon entering the school lobby, the shooter instructed everyone to lie down and attempted to fire at a student. However, his firearm malfunctioned. After clearing the jam, he discharged the weapon, missing another student.

The two students who were targeted then pleaded for their lives and were permitted to depart. Other students followed suit as Moore emerged from a nearby office and tackled Hawkins.

During the struggle, Moore managed to overpower Hawkins, pinning him to a bench and dislodging the firearm from his grip. Another staff member swiftly intervened, kicking the handgun away before removing it to the office.

In the ensuing confrontation, Hawkins managed to fire his weapon, hitting Principal Moore in the leg. Authorities have stated that Moore received hospital treatment and is currently in stable condition and recovering.

Prosecutors have indicated that Hawkins, a former student of the school, expressed a dislike for Principal Moore.

Reports suggest that Hawkins was influenced by the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Colorado, where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed thirteen students and one teacher before dying by suicide.

Hawkins allegedly confessed to police that he took his father's firearms without permission to carry out the attack.

An affidavit detailing his statement indicates that he had intended to kill students, faculty members, Principal Moore, and himself.

Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May stated that Principal Moore's intervention prevented what could have escalated into a significant massacre.

'His actions don't surprise me, but they are indeed amazing,' Chief May commented. 'I have no doubt that he saved children's lives.'

According to jail records, Hawkins was being held on Wednesday with bail set at $1 million at the Garvin County Detention Center.

Court documents reveal that Hawkins faces charges including shooting with intent to kill, two counts of feloniously pointing a firearm, and two counts of carrying a weapon to a public assembly.

Hawkins is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing on May 8.
