Esteemed American singer and songwriter Neil Sedaka, whose discography includes timeless hits such as "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," "Oh! Carol," "Calendar Girl," and "Laughter in the Rain," has passed away at 86.

His family announced his death, characterising the loss as deeply felt.

"Our family is heartbroken by the sudden departure of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather," the statement read. "He was a genuine rock and roll icon, a source of inspiration for millions, and most importantly, an extraordinary individual who will be profoundly missed."

Sedaka, a gifted pianist and five-time Grammy nominee, built a career that spanned more than sixty years. During this time, he authored and performed numerous songs that topped the charts and collaborated with several prominent musicians.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sedaka received his early musical training at the esteemed Juilliard School before embarking on his career in the music business. In the late 1950s, he was instrumental in forming the doo-wop group The Tokens.

He gained widespread recognition in the early 1960s with a series of popular songs, including "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," which became one of the defining tunes of that era.

Sedaka also extended his talents to writing music for other artists. An early triumph occurred when Connie Francis recorded "Stupid Cupid" in 1958, a song he co-wrote with a neighbour while still a teenager.

While his popularity in the United States experienced a dip during the late 1960s, coinciding with the rise of the British Invasion, Sedaka later achieved a successful comeback. In 1975, he re-entered the Billboard Top 10 with "Love Will Keep Us Together," a song he wrote and was famously recorded by the duo Captain & Tennille.

Throughout the 1970s, he also released several albums under Elton John's record label, which further revitalised his career and introduced his music to new listeners.

In an interview with the BBC in 2012, while visiting London for a piano concerto performance at the Royal Albert Hall, Sedaka discussed his dual passion for classical music alongside his pop career.

"It is incredibly beneficial for the spirit to be able to play classical music," he remarked. "However, touring and performing your own lyrics and music offers a deeply satisfying experience, and I harbour no regrets."

Neil Sedaka's family has not revealed the cause or location of his death. Nevertheless, his enduring musical legacy continues through the classic songs that significantly influenced the development of modern pop music.
