The Riverine Governor 2023 (RG23) movement has urged political parties and key figures in Rivers State to endorse the completion of two terms for riverine Ijaw governors. This appeal, made in anticipation of the 2027 elections, is framed as a measure to foster fairness, balance, and equity in the state's political leadership.

The movement, which previously advocated for a power shift to the riverine Ijaw region in 2023, stated its position during a press conference held in Port Harcourt. The group, alongside its affiliated organizations, had been instrumental in pushing for this agenda.

During the conference, conveners Pureh Kalango and Confidence Idah emphasized that this call is essential for maintaining political stability and ensuring equitable representation between the upland and riverine communities of Rivers State. They pointed out that since Nigeria's return to democratic rule in 1999, upland politicians have occupied the governorship for a total of 24 years, with an additional three years as deputy governor. Conversely, riverine Ijaws have primarily served as deputy governor for 24 years, holding the governorship position for only three years.

"As we approach the 2027 general elections, we urge that the Riverine Ijaws be allowed to complete their two terms, just as our upland brothers have done," stated the group in their appeal.

The conveners stressed that their plea transcends partisan politics and represents a shared ambition of the riverine Ijaw populace. They cautioned that failing to uphold the existing political equilibrium could exacerbate divisions within Rivers State.

Furthermore, the group asserted that preserving the unwritten rotational agreement between the upland and riverine areas is vital for sustaining peace and unity across the state.

According to the group's assessment, if this appeal is heeded, the governorship race in 2027 might potentially feature the current Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Boma Iyaye, who is recognized as a close associate of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
