Legendary actor Robert Duvall, widely acclaimed for his significant contributions to films such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, has passed away at the age of 95.

Duvall died peacefully at his residence in Middleburg, Virginia, on Sunday, as confirmed by a statement from his wife, Luciana. Throughout his illustrious career, which spanned more than sixty years, he gained recognition for his portrayal of complex and often formidable characters, demonstrating remarkable presence and emotional depth.

He earned an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Tender Mercies and received six additional Oscar nominations. His impactful portrayal of Tom Hagen in The Godfather Part II solidified his reputation as one of Hollywood's most esteemed performers.

In Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, Duvall’s character, Lieutenant Colonel William Kilgore, delivered the unforgettable line, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.” Coppola lamented his passing, referring to Duvall as a vital component of his production company, American Zoetrope.

Duvall made his initial screen appearance as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird, delivering a memorable silent performance that consistently drew praise from critics and fellow actors alike.

His extensive filmography also includes notable roles in Network, The Great Santini, The Apostle, and The Judge. However, Duvall himself often pointed to his performance as Augustus McCrae in the television miniseries Lonesome Dove as his most cherished role.

Al Pacino, who shared the screen with Duvall in The Godfather, expressed that it was a privilege to work with him and lauded his "phenomenal gift."
