Andrey Podyelyshev, the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, has countered recent allegations suggesting that Nigerians are being enlisted to participate in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, labeling these assertions as misleading and not associated with the Russian government.

During a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the ambassador stated that there is no official program endorsed by the state for involving Nigerian citizens in the war, emphasizing that any such endeavors would be considered illegal.

Podyelyshev remarked, "If there are illegal individuals attempting to recruit Nigerians to engage in combat in Ukraine, this is not linked to the Russian government." He added that Moscow would submit any reliable information to Russian law enforcement for further inquiry.

His comments were delivered during a diplomatic briefing titled "Russia in a Multipolar World Order: African Perspective" held to commemorate Russia's Diplomatic Service Day.

Podyelyshev reiterated Russia's dedication to fostering a multipolar global framework grounded in international law, emphasizing sovereign equality and non-involvement in other nations' affairs. He advocated for reforms in global institutions, including enhancing African representation on the UN Security Council.

He noted that Nigeria is a strategic ally, citing expanding collaborations in defense, education, energy, healthcare, and security, along with plans for a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology and increased scholarships for Nigerian students wishing to study in Russia.
