A Nigerian citizen who was being held as an undertrial in an Indian prison has passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. The 66-year-old man, known only as Solomon, died on Monday, April 6, 2026, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Greater Noida.
Jail officials reported that Solomon had a history of significant health problems, including high blood pressure and severe kidney disease. On Friday morning, around 10 a.m., he reportedly began having trouble breathing within the prison grounds and subsequently had a cardiac arrest.
Prison staff swiftly transported him to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) Hospital to receive emergency medical attention. However, medical professionals at the hospital pronounced him dead.
Police have stated that the precise cause of death will be determined once all mandatory legal procedures are completed. Solomon had been in judicial custody since May 31, 2023, facing charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was incarcerated at the Gautam Budh Nagar District Jail in Luksar village.
Following the incident, the GIMS Hospital authorities notified the Ecotech-I police station. Law enforcement officials confirmed that Solomon's family members and the intelligence department have been informed, and the necessary legal protocols are being followed.
Officials from the jail administration confirmed that Solomon had previously received medical treatment for his conditions at various hospitals in Delhi and Meerut, and his health had been critical for some time.
Solomon was part of a group of 10 foreign nationals apprehended on May 17, 2023, during an anti-narcotics operation led by the Greater Noida Police. Acting on a tip, a police team intercepted a car carrying individuals suspected of trafficking drugs.
During questioning, the arrested individuals allegedly provided information about a drug manufacturing facility operating from a residence in the Theta sector, falling under the jurisdiction of the Beta-II police station. Authorities subsequently raided the location and reportedly dismantled an alleged drug factory operating from the rented house.
The operation resulted in the arrest of the 10 foreign nationals and the seizure of a substantial quantity of narcotic substances, including cocaine and approximately 46 kilograms of MDMA, along with raw materials and equipment for producing synthetic drugs.
A case was registered at the Beta-II police station following the arrests, charging the individuals under various sections of the NDPS Act and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act.
