On Tuesday, the Senate convened for a lengthy closed-door session to engage in discussions regarding the Electoral Act Amendment Bills, with members stepping up internal consultations before the review of the proposed legislation.
As of mid-afternoon, the session had continued for over two hours, reflecting a renewed examination by senators of the elements included in the suggested amendments to the Electoral Act.
In the previous week, the Senate had formed a seven-member ad hoc committee aimed at refining the report from its Standing Committee on Electoral Matters. Chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbomire, the committee was entrusted with gathering further contributions and input from lawmakers before the plenary scheduled for Tuesday to consider the highly anticipated Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The ad hoc committee was allotted 48 hours to finalize its tasks and present the findings back to the Senate.
However, upon reconvening for Tuesday’s plenary, the senators opted once more to proceed behind closed doors, indicative of ongoing deliberations and internal evaluations regarding the proposed amendments.
As of 3:00 p.m., the Senate continued in closed session with discussions still in progress.
