Senator Ibrahim-Khalid Mustapha, who represents the Kaduna North constituency, has parted ways with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His resignation letter, dated March 27, highlights persistent leadership crises, factional differences, and drawn-out legal disputes affecting the party.

The senator communicated his decision in a letter directed to the PDP Ward Chairman for Soba within the Kaduna State Local Government Area.

Lawal Balarabe, the Zonal Coordinator for the Senatorial District Office in Zaria, confirmed this development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. He mentioned that Mustapha has yet to announce any new political affiliation.

In his resignation letter, Mustapha articulated: “I wish to formally tender my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective today, March 27.” He pointed to the continual court cases, disagreements in leadership, and the various factions within the party as significant contributors to his decision.

He further elaborated that these prolonged disputes have heightened tensions and undermined the unity and clear vision that the party once had.

“The internal crises, ongoing legal issues, and leadership disagreements have rendered it increasingly challenging for me to remain an active and committed member. The ongoing leadership discord has severely impacted the party's stability, making true engagement amongst members nearly impossible,” he remarked.

Despite his departure, Mustapha expressed gratitude towards party members for their loyalty and encouragement throughout his political journey.

“I sincerely thank all the party faithful for their support and belief in me over the years,” he concluded. A handwritten note from the letter confirms that the original copy was received by the PDP Ward Chairman of Soba on the same day.

Mustapha, currently serving as Deputy Chairman of both the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, as well as the Committee on National Atomic and Nuclear Energy, represents the Kaduna North Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
