Senator Peter Jiya representing Niger South has made the decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His defection was announced during a plenary session on Tuesday, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter addressing his resignation from the PDP.
In the letter, Jiya revealed, "I was formerly a member of the PDP, which was my sponsoring party. However, today, I have resigned my membership of the PDP. This decision comes as a result of the ongoing quarrels and significant divisions within the party."
Jiya also stated, "Effective immediately, I have chosen to join and associate myself with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to continue my political ambitions."
He expressed his sincere gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities afforded to him during his time with the party and wished it success in overcoming its internal disputes.
Following Jiya's defection, the current breakdown of the Senate by party affiliation stands at: APC with 90 senators, ADC with nine, PDP with four, APGA with one, and NDC with one. The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) holds one seat, and Accord has one, while both the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Labour Party have no representation, leaving three seats vacant due to past deaths of former officeholders.
