The National Chairman of the Council of Ulama Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, has labeled the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a significant risk.

Sheikh Jingir expressed that Amupitan’s appointment is entirely rejected by the Muslim community in Nigeria, particularly due to the integral role of INEC as an electoral body.

He made these remarks at the conclusion of the 33rd annual national seminar hosted by JIBWIS at Saddeqa event center, located in Jos.

Amupitan has faced criticism for a legal document he authored several years ago, which purportedly justified claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

Despite the Tinubu government repeatedly denying these allegations, there has been a noticeable silence regarding the calls for Amupitan’s dismissal.

According to Jingir, Amupitan has previously accused Muslims in Nigeria of engaging in acts of genocide against Christians, which raises concerns about his suitability for such a critical position as INEC chairman.

He questioned, "Why would someone who has insulted Sheikh Usman Danfodio and Muslims be appointed to lead INEC?"

The cleric urged members of the National Assembly to take a stand on this matter and ensure that a just and capable individual is appointed as the head of the commission.

He emphasized that Muslims are firmly opposed to having someone who has called for foreign actions against Nigeria in such a significant role, stating, “The decision by a Muslim-Muslim administration to appoint him as the electoral chief is an extremely high-risk maneuver.”
