A bride's wedding day was marred by an alleged act of revenge when her sister- in-law reportedly threw black paint on her just minutes before she was scheduled to walk down the aisle. The incident occurred on May 24, 2024, leaving 35-year-old Gemma Monk distressed and forced to make last-minute changes.
According to reports, Antonia Eastwood, the sister-in-law, is accused of carrying out the attack as a retaliation. The dispute allegedly began the previous year when Eastwood claimed Monk had tried to trip her during Eastwood's own wedding to Monk's brother, Ashley.
The attack took place at Oakwood House, a Victorian mansion in Maidstone, in front of guests, causing Monk to break down in tears. Eastwood reportedly fled the scene following the incident.
Despite the disruption, Monk, a mother of two, managed to compose herself. She cleaned herself up in a changing area and managed to borrow a different dress, which was brought by an usher, so she could proceed with marrying her partner of over two decades.
Eastwood, aged 49, pleaded guilty to criminal damage charges related to the destruction of the wedding gown, valued at £1,800. The court heard that the venue, Oakwood House, suffered financial losses estimated to be over £5,000 due to the incident.
Monk, who works in mental health care, described the profound impact the event had on her life. In a victim impact statement read to the court, she shared that the attack led to depression and an inability to work. She expressed feeling a loss of dignity and questioned her own actions, stating that the incident transformed what should have been the happiest day of her life into a terrible, unforgettable memory.
The emotional toll was so significant that Monk and her partner cancelled their planned honeymoon to the Maldives. She recounted feeling an unsettling premonition before getting out of the car on the wedding day, a feeling her father initially dismissed as pre-wedding nerves.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Pietro Matarazzo detailed how the paint covered the bride's dress, eyes, face, and skin. Monk reportedly confronted Eastwood, her brother's wife, and grabbed her by the hair, but Eastwood managed to escape.
