At least six individuals have been reported dead after a military helicopter from Qatar crashed into the territorial waters of the country, attributed to what officials referred to as a 'technical malfunction.'

The Ministry of Interior of Qatar announced on Sunday that there were seven people on the helicopter during the incident and stated that 'specialised operations are continuing to locate the other missing person.'

Prior to this, the Ministry of Defence of Qatar had shared on X that the helicopter encountered a technical fault while performing 'routine duty,' leading to the crash. They reported no signs of hostile action and did not provide additional details about the cause of the incident beyond mentioning the malfunction.

The Defence Ministry identified the deceased individuals as Captain Mubarak Salem Daway al-Marri, Sergeant Fahad Hadi Ghanem al-Khayarin, and Corporal Mohammed Maher Mohammed, all associated with the Qatar Armed Forces. Additionally, Major Sinan Tastekin from the Qatar-Türkiye Joint Forces was killed, along with Turkish civilian collaborators Suleiman Cemra Kahraman and Ismail Anas Can.

The ministry also noted that search efforts are still in progress for Captain Saeed Nasser Samekh, who remains missing.

The Defence Ministry extended its heartfelt condolences to the victims' families in a statement.

In another development, Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence confirmed that one of its soldiers and two personnel from the Turkish defense company Aselsan were among those who perished. They stated that the aircraft crashed due to a technical issue while on a training flight.

“The aircraft had crashed due to a technical issue during a training flight,” the Turkish ministry noted, highlighting that Qatari authorities would carry out further investigations to ascertain the precise reason behind the crash.

This tragic incident occurs amid rising regional tensions, with Qatar experiencing multiple attacks since the United States and Israel initiated a joint operation against Iran on February 28. Consequently, Qatari forces have intercepted numerous Iranian drones and missiles.

Moreover, earlier this week, Iranian strikes targeted Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar’s primary natural gas hub, inflicting what officials have described as 'significant damage.'

Saad al-Kaabi, the Chief Executive Officer of QatarEnergy and Minister of State for Energy Affairs, conveyed to Reuters that the assaults have disrupted 17 percent of the nation's liquefied natural gas export capabilities, resulting in an estimated annual revenue loss of $20 billion. He mentioned that two of Qatar's 14 LNG trains and one of its gas-to-liquids facilities sustained damage during these unprecedented strikes.
