On Tuesday, a serious multiple vehicle collision at the Old Toll Gate area of Ota along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway resulted in the loss of six lives, while two others sustained injuries.
The incident involved an articulated vehicle, registered as EKY 913 YH, in addition to two other vehicles.
Reports indicate that the articulated vehicle, a tanker loaded with vegetable oil, suffered a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and crash into pedestrians nearby, leading to the tragic outcome.
Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, the spokesperson for the state sector command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the details in a statement released to the media on Tuesday.
Odunsi-Oyewole stated, “A tragic road traffic crash occurred today at approximately 08:00 hrs at the Old Toll Gate, Ota. This unfortunate event resulted in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to two others.
“The incident involved an articulated vehicle (a vegetable oil tanker) carrying the registration number EKY 913 YH, along with two other vehicles.
“Initial investigations suggest that the articulated vehicle experienced a mechanical brake failure while navigating the busy toll gate area.
“The driver then lost control, colliding with both other vehicles and bystanders. Six adults, comprising five males and one female, were confirmed dead, while two individuals sustained various injuries.
“FRSC rescue teams acted swiftly to evacuate all victims to Ota General Hospital. The injured are currently receiving medical care, while the deceased have been transferred to the morgue at Ifo General Hospital.”
