Popular skit maker ZicSaloma has caused a stir on social media by posting a frank video on Instagram where he advises Nigerians to adopt a 'financially heartless' mindset if they wish to break the chains of poverty.
He clarifies that his suggestion does not advocate for cruelty or the neglect of family; rather, it emphasizes the need for strategic thinking and survival in an environment where many relatives often feel entitled to another's financial success.
ZicSaloma shared that several of his previous entrepreneurial ventures did not materialize due to the constant demands from family members who would seek assistance whenever he showed signs of having money. Whether it was urgent housing needs or unexpected crises, his aspirations were consistently interrupted.
He pointed out that in numerous African households, once one's salary becomes known, everyone assumes they have a claim to part of it. Some relatives may even cease to seek work under the assumption that continuous financial support is guaranteed from the family member.
The comedian suggested that individuals should not openly share their true earnings, and in certain scenarios, they should even understate their financial situation—except during actual emergencies. He argued that accumulating wealth might necessitate saying no to requests and realizing that some people may be displeased as a result.
Additionally, he cautioned against the habit of continually lending money to friends, noting that this practice can foster dependency instead of gratitude, and individuals might harbor resentment despite receiving prior assistance.
