President Bola Tinubu has launched extensive reforms targeting Nigeria's sports funding framework, vowing improved financial allocations and better infrastructure investment starting in 2026.

During a review of Nigeria's sports performances in 2025, the president expressed pride in the nation's accomplishments across various sports disciplines.

"In 2025, from outstanding champions in athletics to victorious females in football and basketball, alongside the Super Eagles who, despite earning a bronze medal at AFCON 2025, captured our hearts, numerous athletes showcased Nigeria's prowess," the president noted in a statement shared on his official social media account.

The Super Eagles secured third place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, while the women's football and basketball teams also achieved notable performances on the continent. Nigerian athletes excelled in various sporting events, including athletics, parasports, combat sports, and team sports.

According to the president, sports act as one of Nigeria's most powerful unifiers.

"Sports encapsulate our national brand; it unites us, transcends our differences, inspires hope, and fosters a sense of community across age, language, ethnicity, religion, and social status," he explained.

Record Medal Haul

Mr. Tinubu indicated that Nigerian athletes amassed a remarkable total of 373 medals across different sports in 2025, describing this achievement as groundbreaking.

"Throughout the past year, Nigerian sportsmen and women have represented our country with pride and bravery across Africa and globally, achieving a historic 373 medals across all sports in 2025," he stated.

He emphasized that these results demonstrate what Nigeria can accomplish when athletes receive the necessary support.

President Bola Tinubu addressing the nation

"From grassroots competitions to international stages, it’s evident that with adequate support and preparation, Nigeria can perform exceptionally well," he added.

The president commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its role in initiating reforms within the sector despite facing numerous challenges.

"I commend the NSC for the advancement and success it has achieved despite adversities. I applaud the leadership under Malam Shehu Dikko for steering the reform agenda toward revitalizing and aligning the sports sector with my administration's renewed hope initiative and prosperity vision," he remarked.

The NSC's reintroduction aims to centralize sports administration and minimize redundancy among government bodies.

Acknowledging Funding Challenges

Mr. Tinubu acknowledged that the development of sports has been hampered for years due to inadequate funding structures.

"We must acknowledge the truth. For too long, the funding for sports has been hindered by bureaucracy and fragmented institutional roles. Funds, when finally allocated, arrive too late for effective preparations or participation," he lamented.

He also pointed out the need for better sports infrastructure.

"Additionally, insufficient investment has been made toward developing and maintaining sports infrastructure that meets global standards. This cycle has undermined performance, placing our athletes at a disadvantage. Changes are essential," he asserted.

Funding Revisions from 2026

The president disclosed that he has instructed relevant ministries to ensure consistent funding for sports beginning with the 2026 budget year.

"I have authorized and instructed the relevant ministries—Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, and the Budget Office—for the restructuring of sports funding to guarantee that adequate provisions for infrastructure development, maintenance, events, and international competition participation are consistently made accessible in the national budget from the 2026 fiscal year," he stated.

He emphasized that funding must be allocated swiftly.

"All appropriated funds must be released immediately following the budget's passage and approval. Nigerian athletes deserve certainty, not excuses," he insisted.

The president also outlined plans to amalgamate sports funding currently scattered across ministries and agencies into one consolidated framework under the NSC.

"Moreover, the funds allocated for sports activities across various ministries will be assessed, restructured, and unified to strengthen domestic programs and support international sports participation," he stated.

Sports as an Economic Catalyst

Mr. Tinubu revealed that these reforms are part of the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE).

"These reforms are rooted in the RHINSE initiative, which recognizes sports as a vehicle for job creation, tourism, investment, and global visibility," he said.

He noted that the plan aims to develop elite athletes, increase grassroots engagement, strengthen federations, and facilitate the hosting of international events.

"Sports are our national treasure and must be governed, financed, and managed according to its unique nature and needs, free from bureaucratic impediments," he articulated.

Future Aspirations

The president reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening the sports sector.

"The prospects for Nigerian sports will involve strategic planning, proper funding, and competitiveness. We will provide our athletes with unwavering support, thorough preparation, and celebrate them proudly.

"Nigeria will achieve continued victories with honor," he concluded.

However, while the president commended the recent progress in the sports sector, critics argue that these achievements are superficial. They assert that Nigeria's focus seems to prioritize participation in international competitions over substantive, long-term development domestically.

According to these critics, the emphasis remains on sending athletes to significant events while insufficiently investing in grassroots development, coaching education, and modern training infrastructures. They argue that authentic improvement should manifest in robust domestic leagues, enhanced infrastructure, and clear pathways for young athletes, rather than being measured solely by medal counts or participation in global arenas.

Some analysts caution that without consistent funding dedicated to talent identification and athlete support, sustaining recent successes may prove challenging. They maintain that comprehensive reform must transcend short-term outcomes to resolve the structural challenges that have restricted Nigeria’s sports growth for decades.
