President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sanctioned the relocation of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to allow it to report directly to the Presidency.
This action effectively removes the bureau’s oversight from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, placing it under the direct jurisdiction of the Presidency.
The approval was communicated via a State House letter dated March 5, 2026, and forwarded to the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development on March 11, calling for immediate action. The letter also instructs the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to revise the NSIB Establishment Act 2022 and present the amendments to the National Assembly.
This change signifies a strategic move to enhance the bureau's proximity to the central governance structure concerning national policies.
According to Weekend Trust, the NSIB was established under the NSIB Establishment Act 2022, replacing the former Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), which was focused solely on aviation accident inquiries.
With the introduction of the NSIB, its scope has broadened to include investigations into accidents across all forms of transportation.
As the NSIB continues to develop as a multi-modal accident investigation authority, there has been increasing advocacy for its transfer from the Aviation Ministry, reflecting its expanded responsibilities beyond aviation.
This transition represents a crucial advancement in Nigeria's approach to transport safety, emphasizing the need for comprehensive investigations across four primary modes of transport: aviation, marine, rail, and tracked vehicles.
