Tinubu Slams Atiku Over Hardship, Questions Source of Wealth for University

President Bola Tinubu has fired back at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other critics over prevailing economic hardships, holding past administrations responsible for the current national challenges. Speaking at a political event in Rivers State, Tinubu specifically questioned how Atiku managed to establish a private university while serving in government.

President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration against mounting criticism regarding economic hardship and food scarcity, pointing the finger at former leaders he claims are responsible for the nation's current predicament.

Addressing supporters on Saturday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during a political rally, Tinubu stated that his government was actively tidying up governance failures inherited from past regimes. Specifically addressing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu remarked that the opposition figures complaining the loudest were the ones who laid the foundation for the difficulties.

“Those people talking of hunger, I’m cleaning the mess they created. Atiku was one of them,” the president declared.

Tinubu further raised questions regarding Atiku's financial history and ethical standing during his time in office under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, querying how a public servant managed to fund the establishment of a tertiary institution.

“Ask him how he built a university while in office as vice president in charge of our economy. Who built the university for him? It’s your money. It’s your effort,” Tinubu asserted.

Beyond the economic debate, the president expressed gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their crucial backing during the 2023 general elections, recalling that their endorsement helped secure his victory at a time when his political prospects appeared uncertain. He also hinted at his political future, noting his desire to seek continued support from the electorate.

What led to the political exchange?

The exchange highlights the intensifying political rhetoric between the ruling administration and opposition figures as debates over inflation, poverty, and governance policies continue to dominate public discourse across the country. Critics have frequently faulted the current administration for sweeping economic reforms, such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, which have driven up the cost of living.
