Nigerian sprint hurdles star Tobi Amusan is poised to return to competition as her participation has been officially announced for the women's 100m hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic, scheduled for July 4 in Eugene, Oregon.

This event will take place at the renowned Hayward Field, which is part of the esteemed Diamond League circuit, and is expected to showcase some of the finest athletes in the sport this season.

For Amusan, this race is not just another event; it symbolizes her comeback after a hiatus from competitive athletics since her appearance at the World Athletics Championships in September 2025.

Few venues hold as much importance in her career as Eugene.

Hayward Field is the site where Amusan delivered an outstanding performance during the 2022 World Athletics Championships, clinching her first world title and setting the current world record of 12.12 seconds in the women's 100m hurdles.

She subsequently returned to the same venue in 2023, further asserting her dominance by winning the Diamond League final.

Amusan, aged 28, has firmly established herself as a leading figure in sprint hurdling over the past decade. From 2021 to 2023, she achieved an impressive feat by winning the Diamond League final three consecutive times, further solidifying her status among the elite competitors.

However, her return to Eugene will see her face strong contenders.

The race will include reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams, and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark, ensuring a highly competitive environment.

Russell, as the Olympic titleholder, is emerging as a force in women’s athletics. She is on the hunt for her first Diamond League title following a successful season last year, which included her first Diamond League win in Silesia in August 2025, where she achieved a meeting record of 12.19 seconds.

Grace Stark also had an impressive 2025 Diamond League season, securing meeting records in Keqiao, Stockholm, and Paris before earning a bronze medal in Tokyo at the World Championships.

Veteran Jamaican hurdler Danielle Williams brings a wealth of experience to the competition, having secured two world championship titles, with her latest victory occurring at the 2023 event in Budapest, and previously winning the Diamond League title in 2019.

The Prefontaine Classic stands as the ninth meeting of the 2026 Diamond League season, commencing in Doha on May 8 and culminating with the two-day final in Brussels on September 4 and 5.

Stretching across 15 cities on four continents, the annual Diamond League circuit unites many of the world's best track and field athletes. Eugene is regarded as one of the most prestigious venues on the calendar, often yielding fast times and unforgettable performances.

With Amusan returning to the track where she made history, there is a strong potential for another remarkable display by Nigeria's record-setting hurdler.
