Seven individuals lost their lives in a tragic road incident along the Damaturu-Damagum Highway near Gaggaba village, situated in the Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to Yobe State Police spokesperson, Dungus Abdulkarim, the unfortunate event took place around 1:20 PM on Thursday, January 15.
"The Yobe State Police Command regrets to report a deadly vehicular accident that transpired on January 15, 2026, at approximately 0120 hours in Gaggaba Village, part of the Damagum region," Abdulkarim stated.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the collision involved a DAF trailer bearing Registration Number DAL 963 YY, operated by Malam Abubakar, a 35-year- old resident of Maiduguri, Borno State, who was en route from Lagos to Maiduguri. It also involved a Mitsubishi Canter with Registration Number XA 437 NNR, driven by Salisu Ibrahim from Dirra Village within Fune Local Government Area.
Reports suggest that as the vehicles approached Gaggaba Village, the Mitsubishi Canter, reportedly traveling at high speed, strayed from its lane and collided with the oncoming DAF trailer.
As a result of the crash, both drivers, along with three passengers in the trailer and two in the Mitsubishi Canter, totaling seven individuals, were declared dead at the scene.
Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, Police Commissioner Emmanuel Ado voiced alarm over the increasing number of road traffic fatalities, which claimed 120 lives statewide in 2025, urging for collective efforts to address this pressing issue.
