The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for Akwa Ibom State has reported a tragic incident involving a road accident that led to the death of three individuals in the Eket Local Government Area.
The crash occurred on the Ikot-Ibiok-Ikot Usekong Road, involving a vehicle and a commercial motorcycle.
A source affiliated with the command, who chose to remain anonymous as they were not authorized to disclose details about the event, informed the News Agency of Nigeria that the accident took place around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
The registration number of the orange Salive Dodge car involved was noted as BWR 858 AV, while the motorcycle’s registration number was KPD 641 QA.
The source attributed the cause of the accident to reckless speeding and improper overtaking by the motorcyclist. According to the source, the motorcyclist was transporting three young men and was attempting to overtake another vehicle at high speed when they lost control, leading to a head-on collision with the approaching car.
The FRSC representative remarked, “Three individuals died on the scene, while another sustained significant injuries.” The bodies were swiftly retrieved by the FRSC operatives and transported to a local morgue, while the injured party received immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital.
The official noted that the FRSC team arrived five minutes after the incident occurred and worked to clear debris from the roadway. The representative also urged young commercial motorcycle riders to prioritize safety, emphasizing the dangers of excessive speed.
“If you find yourself on a motorcycle, tricycle, or taxi, and the driver is speeding, do not hesitate to ask them to slow down and proceed cautiously,” the official advised.
In a related incident in Edo State, at least 11 people lost their lives and seven others were injured on January 17, when a bus collided with a truck along the Benin-Agbor Road. Witnesses suggested that the bus driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, resulting in a head-on crash with an oncoming truck. The commercial bus, which has a capacity of 18 passengers, was headed towards Lagos.
