Tribute to Professor Olugboyega ObaFemi Omololu (1956–2026)

On this day, I extend my heartfelt tribute to Professor Olugboyega ObaFemi Omololu, who graced our lives from 1956 until his passing in 2026. Throughout my academic journey, he instilled a deep confidence in me, encouraging me to embrace my identity as a thinker and scholar, particularly during times when I needed reassurance the most.

Reflecting on his considerable influence, I express gratitude for the belief he instilled in countless students. For many of us fortunate to be under his guidance, we discovered the practice of giving back, as his mentorship inspired us to support the next generation with the same fervor he exhibited.

The reality of loss weighs heavily on the academic community as we grapple with the recent passing of several individuals in quick succession, stirring both grief and reflection.

I first crossed paths with Professor Omololu while embarking on my MSc project in Sociology at the University of Ibadan. Before our personal interactions, he was renowned as our lecturer in Sociological Theory and Social Policy and Planning. His classroom presence was magnetic, often engaging us with clever tactics to maintain our interest.

My engagement with him deepened when Professor Olufunke Fayehun directed me to seek his supervision for my project, citing a shared mindset that she believed would benefit me. During our initial discussions, I was struck by his warmth and attentiveness, as he eagerly encouraged me to explore my academic interests. He assured me of my potential for research advancement, pushing me toward pursuing a doctorate.

Despite knowing I faced personal obstacles that would hinder my progress, he remained persistent and uplifting. I found myself buoyed by his unwavering optimism, which gave me the courage to reassess my circumstances. His unwavering support allowed me to navigate financial challenges, ensuring that I was able to focus on my studies.

As I began my PhD journey, I frequently questioned my choice of a research topic that necessitated data collection in China. Each time apprehension seized me, he would confidently reassure me that if my concept was compelling enough, funding would materialize. His words encouraged me greatly, even reminding me that he had yet to review my proposal.

Professor Omololu was a paragon of patience and tolerance, exhibiting a steadfast faith that did not interfere with our professional dynamics. With humor and humility, he cultivated open dialogue on various topics, prompting me to differentiate between activism and academic inquiry.

Through his example, I learned the imperative of fairness in assessment, advocating for a fresh perspective with each student's work to accommodate diverse thought processes. This approach has fundamentally shaped my grading philosophy as an educator.

Beyond academic support, he welcomed me into his professional sphere, often considering my well-being by providing sustenance when I struggled. His generosity extended to my family, as he nurtured my aspirations and prayed for my successes, even extending wishes for my newest family member.

In closing, I honor a man who taught us the significance of uplifting others as we ascend. Professor Omololu's commitment to education and to those around him has left an enduring legacy, cementing his role as a guide, mentor, and friend.
