The global Christian community is mourning the loss of a significant figure in gospel music. Dr. Ron Kenoly, acknowledged as the 'Professor of Praise,' passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the age of 81.
His longtime music director, Bruno Miranda, announced the sad news in a heartfelt statement, confirming that Kenoly departed peacefully on the morning of February 3. In an emotional tribute, Miranda emphasized Kenoly's dedication to his mission:
"This morning, Feb. 3, 2026, we said goodbye to Dr. Ron Kenoly… Doc was very intentional about one thing: he was never an artist, never an entertainer. He was a worship leader. Today we grieve deeply but not without hope. The worship he lived is now the worship he beholds."
For many millennials, reminiscing about their childhoods includes the sound of Kenoly's music echoing through their homes. Those who grew up in Nigerian households during the late 90s and early 2000s likely spent their Sundays or school commutes listening to his albums. Kenoly infused gospel music with a lively, big-band sound that revolutionized worship experiences in churches across Nigeria. His renowned tracks, including "Ancient of Days," "Lift Him Up," "Jesus Is Alive," and the profoundly spiritual "Anointing Fall On Me," set high standards for worship music.
Following the announcement of his passing, numerous tributes poured in from notable figures in Nigeria's gospel music industry. Nathaniel Bassey expressed his admiration for the man who inspired many, saying: "Dr. Ron Kenoly crosses to yonder side. Thank you for inspiring generations of psalmists like me. I grew up on these songs. And today, others are growing up on ours. Thank you, sir."
Dunsin Oyekan also paid his respects to the gospel legend, stating: "Honouring a General! Rest in Peace Dr. Ron Kenoly. An end of an era… You are now singing Forever in His Presence."
Kenoly's remarkable contributions to music did not go unnoticed; he was awarded the GMA Dove Award for Praise and Worship Album of the Year in 1997 for his album "Welcome Home," which also achieved a spot at the top of the Billboard contemporary worship charts.
Dr. Ron Kenoly is survived by his wife, Diana, who serves as a UN Ambassador, and their three sons: Samuel, Ronald Jr., and Tony, collectively known to many as the Kenoly Brothers. He is also remembered by several grandchildren.
