Governor Uba Sani received five awards from different health sector unions, recognizing his efforts to enhance healthcare delivery and improve the welfare of health workers since he took office.
The awards were presented on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board headquarters, where the Governor also initiated the distribution of medical equipment and ambulances.
Notable recipients of these awards included the Kaduna State Council of Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and the Kaduna State chapter of the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria.
In addition, awards were given to the Kaduna State branches of the National Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria and the Association of Medical Laboratory Technicians and Assistants of Nigeria.
At the event, Governor Uba Sani highlighted several achievements of his administration in the health sector over the past two and a half years. He mentioned that his government has revitalized and upgraded a total of 255 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) to Level-2 status, marking the highest number in the nation, aimed at increasing access to quality healthcare in underserved regions.
He also mentioned establishing 23 Centers of Excellence in Primary Healthcare—one in each local government area—to serve as hubs for advanced care and patient referrals.
Additionally, the Governor reported the establishment of 120 new neonatal areas across the state to reduce neonatal illnesses and deaths, particularly in rural and underserved zones.
Furthermore, Sani announced that he has procured three oxygen plants with extensive supply systems to ensure readiness for emergency cases, thereby lowering morbidity and mortality rates associated with such situations.
The Kaduna State Government, under his leadership, has renovated 19 General Hospitals across the state to enhance secondary healthcare services, enabling them to serve as suitable referral centers for PHCs. He also noted the upgrade of the KADHSMA warehouse to a pharmaceutical-grade facility, significantly enhancing the availability of essential medicines with a generous 1,600 square meters of storage space.
He mentioned that the Kaduna State has begun implementing the full 2024 CONMESS and CONHESS salary scales and has addressed all promotion backlogs.
Governor Uba Sani stated that the recent launch of the distribution of modern medical equipment and ambulances to Primary Health Care centers aims to improve service delivery, enhance emergency response, and strengthen referral systems throughout the state.
He emphasized that this is the second phase of sophisticated medical equipment being distributed to the PHCs by his administration since he assumed office.
"We fundamentally believe that no mother should lose her life during childbirth, nor should any child die due to preventable causes because essential equipment or timely transportation is not available," he asserted.
He also pointed out that the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board Headquarters is the largest of its kind nationally, intended to serve as a hub for reform implementation, performance monitoring, and ensuring optimal functionality of all Primary Health Care facilities across the wards.
While introducing a newly inducted group of 1,800 health workers into the healthcare system, he remarked that these individuals represent the first batch in an annual recruitment drive planned to take place over five consecutive years.
"This strategic recruitment initiative reflects our understanding that infrastructure and equipment alone are insufficient—human resources are the backbone of healthcare," he argued.
The Governor affirmed his administration's commitment to prioritizing primary healthcare, recognizing it as the cornerstone of a functional health system and a vital pathway to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
"Through facility revitalization, enhanced governance under the Primary Health Care Under One Roof policy, expansion of the health workforce, and strategic partnerships, we are ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to everyone, irrespective of their location or socioeconomic status," he concluded.
