The United Nations Development Programme has introduced a $250,000 (approximately N337 million) innovation funding opportunity tailored for Yobe State through its Innovation Challenge initiative, aimed at bolstering youth entrepreneurship and driving sustainable local economic growth. This prospective financial support was brought to light during a strategic technical session between Yobe State's Secretary to the Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, and a visiting UNDP team headed by the leader of its Northeast Sub-office, Mr. Charles Mback, in Damaturu.
The engagement stemmed directly from a previous high-level dialogue held in Abuja days prior, where Dr. Goje—acting under the instructions of Governor Mai Mala Buni—conversed with the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah. Those initial talks centered on deepening collaboration between the local administration and the international agency across vital areas such as long-term recovery, private-sector engagement, technological advancement, youth empowerment, and inclusive financial expansion.
What is the purpose of the proposed UniPod facility?
A central pillar of this emerging cooperation is the planned creation of a University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at Yobe State University, located in Damaturu. This upcoming hub is designed to function as a center for digital proficiency training, practical research, business incubation, and technology- oriented remedies for local developmental hurdles. Furthermore, the installation aims to link local youth with modern technological trends, commercial prospects, and wider innovation ecosystems to facilitate a shift toward a resilient, knowledge-driven economy.
During the discussions, the UNDP representatives also updated state officials on the rollout of the Durable Solutions Programme, alongside ongoing interventions across education, public health, and other critical sectors.
Addressing the delegation, Dr. Goje reiterated the state administration's readiness to supply the necessary institutional backing and logistical coordination to bring these proposals to fruition, pending formal program guidelines. He emphasized that the government's current agenda prioritizes converting recent achievements in infrastructure, academic growth, health services, and institutional strengthening into long-lasting economic prospects for citizens.
The SSG underscored that collaborative frameworks with development partners must transition past mere dialogue into concrete, actionable projects capable of yielding tangible dividends for youths, women, and marginalized populations. The $250,000 grant and the UniPod project signify a broader strategy by Yobe State and the UNDP to shift their cooperative focus away from short-term humanitarian relief toward enduring economic recovery and modernization.
