The University of Abuja has declared an increase in transportation costs for its students and staff due to a sharp rise in petrol prices.

In a communication from the school's transportation office, it was stated that the fare hike was necessitated by the increase in fuel prices, which jumped from N980 to N1,370. This new price point has significantly affected transport operations on the campus.

The notice, signed by Amdii Amdii, the Head of the Transportation Office, indicated that both the university’s buses and private shuttle services were impacted by the rise in fuel costs.

"Consequently, the function of the university’s buses and private shuttle operators has been hampered due to the new fuel pricing regime," the notice read.

To manage the situation, the university has revised transport fares for trips between the Mini Campus and the Main Campus. Under the revised rates, fares for university-operated buses will now be N600, increased from N400, while fares for private shuttle services will rise to N700 from N500.

The university management consulted with various stakeholders, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the Students’ Union Government (SUG) prior to making this decision.

These new fares took effect on Thursday, March 26, 2026, although the university has assured its community that the increase is temporary and will be reassessed if fuel prices decrease.

“We seek the understanding of the university community during this evaluation period," the released statement concluded.

Additionally, a notable surge in fuel prices has been observed, with costs surpassing N1,200. Factors contributing to this increase include geopolitical tensions resulting from the war between the United States/Israel and Iran, leading to disruptions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz—an essential route for oil transport. This situation has further aggravated the cost of petroleum products in Nigeria, as a significant portion of consumed fuels is imported.
