Renowned Nigerian actor Davis Ofor, widely recognized for his memorable role as Clarus in the classic 1980s television series "New Masquerade," has passed away at the age of 85.
The sad news of Ofor's death was shared by his colleague and friend, actor Tony Akposheri, via Instagram on Tuesday.
While Akposheri did not specify the cause of death, he expressed profound grief and shared fond memories of their friendship and Ofor's enduring spirit. He recounted a recent conversation where they discussed life and future aspirations, highlighting the unexpected nature of his passing.
Akposheri described Ofor as more than just a familiar face on television, but a "friend, a brother, a man with warmth, humour, and a presence that could light up any space." He expressed gratitude for having known him personally and found it difficult to accept that Ofor's voice and life were now just memories.
Ofor gained national recognition for his character, Clarus Mgbeojikwe, the loyal houseboy to Giringory, in "New Masquerade." The sitcom was a staple on the Nigerian Television Network (NTA) from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, becoming one of Nigeria's longest-running and most beloved television programs.
"New Masquerade," created and written by James Iroha, who also featured in the show, remains a significant part of Nigerian television history. Clarus's performance captivated audiences across the nation, making the character unforgettable.
Later in life, Ofor became visually impaired. In a 2009 interview, he stated that his departure from comedy was not solely due to his condition but a deliberate choice to dedicate himself to his faith. He was ordained as a minister in the Aetherius Churches in London in 1989.
