Victor Boniface's ambitions remain intact despite his current season facing interruption. The striker for the Super Eagles has returned to Bayer Leverkusen to initiate a meticulously managed rehabilitation program following successful knee surgery, a procedure that is anticipated to keep him off the pitch for the duration of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.

The 25-year-old forward, who has been on loan at Werder Bremen, had surgery on January 10 to rectify ongoing issues with his right knee, stemming from a history of significant injuries that have posed challenges to his otherwise progressive career path.

Boniface's knee issues are not new, with this latest injury rooted in two cruciate ligament tears sustained in 2019. These injuries have lingered throughout his career and have re-emerged during his loan period in Bremen.

The transfer to Werder Bremen this season aimed to provide Boniface with consistent playing time and rhythm. However, recurring knee discomfort curtailed his appearances, consistency, and overall impact. After several months of navigating pain and apprehension, both clubs reached a consensus that surgery was the most viable long-term remedy.

While this decision brings a halt to his season in Germany, it was made with future considerations in mind.

Upon returning to Bayer Leverkusen's training facilities, Boniface will undergo rehabilitation under close medical oversight. In a recent Snapchat post, he was seen in the club's gym, surrounded by training equipment and footballs, marking a symbolic first step towards what promises to be a rigorous recovery process.

The medical and performance teams at Leverkusen will closely supervise Boniface's rehabilitation, ensuring his return is not only to full fitness but also free from the chronic knee problems that have plagued him for years.

Prior to his injury, Boniface had solidified his status as a pivotal player at both the club and international levels, making his absence significant for both Werder Bremen and the Super Eagles, especially with key international matches approaching.

Among those supporting him is former Nigerian international Obafemi Martins, who publicly offered words of encouragement based on his own experiences. “I had surgery on both knees, and I even played with metal in my leg for nine years. You will come back stronger; just keep the faith. Your talent will not go to waste,” he said.

This message of resilience and belief resonates with Boniface as he faces this new challenge.

Despite this chapter being mainly spent in rehabilitation rather than on the field, the focus is clear: to achieve a complete reset. Bayer Leverkusen is diligently tracking his recovery, optimistic that patience and appropriate care will finally lead to sustained fitness.

For Boniface, this fight is familiar, yet he enters it armed with experience and unwavering belief that this setback will not define his legacy.
