Victor Boniface, a forward for the Super Eagles, has taken a crucial step toward his recovery from injury as he has resumed light training on the pitch, merely a month after having undergone surgery on his knee.

Boniface sustained the injury while playing for Werder Bremen in December. It was later revealed that he had been dealing with a knee ligament issue that had been intensifying since mid-last year. Initially thought to be a minor ailment, the situation worsened, prompting a significant decision regarding medical intervention.

Initially, Boniface was faced with two choices: either to continue enduring the pain or to undergo corrective surgery. After consulting with a specialist at the beginning of the year, he opted for surgery. Boniface is actively working on regaining full fitness and has hinted at a return. On Tuesday, he shared footage of himself engaging in light training, dressed in Bayer Leverkusen's training attire, alongside a personal trainer. Another clip displayed him conducting strength and conditioning exercises at the gym, which are critical components of his carefully monitored rehabilitation.

Although he is still at an early stage of recovery, being back on the field is a significant milestone for Boniface.

Despite continuing his rehabilitation while dressed in Bayer Leverkusen colors, he is still officially a player for Werder Bremen, where he joined on loan last summer, and remains contracted to them for the loan duration.

What lies ahead for Boniface, however, is still ambiguous. Recurrent injuries have hindered his consistency, which could affect Leverkusen's future plans for him. The chances of a permanent transfer have not been entirely ruled out.,

Boniface still has two years remaining on his contract and is eager to maximize this time to reestablish his value, reminding coaches and fans alike why he is considered one of Nigeria's most potent attacking talents.

In light of the gradually building optimism on social media, Werder Bremen has taken steps to manage expectations regarding a quick return.

Peter Niemeyer, the head of professional football at the club, provided an honest update indicating that Boniface is continuing his rehabilitation in Leverkusen following his surgery to repair cartilage damage.

Niemeyer emphasized the importance of patience in this recovery process. "He’s completing his rehab in Leverkusen, and we’re happy about every bit of progress. But it’s still impossible to predict how quickly he’ll be fully fit again," he stated.

He also addressed the speculation surrounding a late-season play for Werder Bremen, stating firmly, "Due to the rehabilitation process, we don’t expect Victor to play for Werder again this season."

Both Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen anticipated a protracted absence post- surgery, and this outlook remains unchanged. There will be no hasty timelines or shortcuts; instead, a gradual and structured recovery will be prioritized to safeguard Boniface's long-term career.
