The Afrobeats icon Wizkid and Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti have intensified their ongoing feud regarding comparisons to the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti. This altercation escalated following Wizkid’s provocative social media activity, prompting Seun to issue a new video response on January 21, 2026.
The controversy, which has become a trending topic on various social platforms, centers around the repeated comparisons made by Wizkid's fanbase, known as Wizkid FC, between the two musicians. Seun Kuti, the son of Fela, has been vocal in his disapproval of such comparisons, labeling them disrespectful and emphasizing that his father’s legacy encompasses more than just music; it includes his role in political activism and cultural resistance.
Tensions heightened on January 20, 2026, when Wizkid expressed his anger on X after facing continuous backlash and personal attacks online, which included insults directed at his family and supporters. In one of his posts, he allegedly made a derogatory comment about Seun Kuti’s wife, stating, “Everyday Wizkid! I f*** ur ugly wife?…”
Wizkid also rejected the idea of being compared to Fela, asserting, “Fela fight for freedom this fool dey fight fc!…” before concluding in another tweet, “Ok everybody better pass Wizkid! Can we all sleep now?”
These statements spurred outrage from the public, especially due to the personal nature of the comment regarding Seun Kuti’s wife, which was widely criticized as crossing an unacceptable boundary.
In response, Seun Kuti posted a video on January 21 where he spoke directly to Wizkid, condemning the involvement of women and children in their conflicts. He remarked, “All real men know one thing, you never involve women and children in a fight. For you to be talking about my wife is ugly… what does she have to do with this? Senseless.”
Additionally, he accused Wizkid's followers of attacking his child online, saying, “Insulting my kid, all your fans on my kid’s page… you’re destroyers. But those kinds of things can’t break me.”
In the same video, Seun expressed that he would not shelter his daughter from public scrutiny, asserting that he wants her to become resilient. “I want my daughter to experience what I experienced so she can be strong like me. Make una dey talk am more, so she can see Nigerians,” he stated.
Seun also commented on the tattoo of Fela that Wizkid has on his arm, warning him in Yoruba (which was translated into English) that he should remove it, suggesting he replace it with a tattoo of his own father if he takes pride in him.
The conflict initially arose in early January when Seun criticized Wizkid FC for equating Wizkid to Fela, insisting that it diminishes his father’s significance as a revolutionary figure to mere fan debates or commercial popularity. Prior to Wizkid's rebuttal, Seun had produced videos denouncing Wizkid FC as “ignorant” and accusing them of trying to appropriate Fela's image, claiming that it was an insult to refer to Wizkid as the new Fela.
As a result of this exchange, public sentiment has remained split. While some fans defended Wizkid for asserting himself and supporting his followers, others rebuked him for dragging Seun’s wife into their conflict, emphasizing that Fela Kuti’s legacy ought to remain distinct from celebrity quarrels.
This incident has once again brought to light an ongoing generational debate in Nigerian music, juxtaposing Fela Kuti’s politically and socially active heritage with Wizkid’s international commercial achievements, a topic that continues to ignite divisions among fans across various social media outlets.
