A 52-year-old woman named Joke has come forward with allegations against her former partner, claiming he compelled her to get his name tattooed on her face and body hundreds of times. She states that the man subjected her to repeated tattooing sessions between 2020 and 2021, purportedly using an inexpensive tattoo machine acquired online. According to Joke, approximately 250 inscriptions, including his name, initials, and phrases like “property of,” were permanently marked onto her skin, covering close to 90 percent of her body.
Joke asserts that the tattoos were intentionally placed on areas of her body her ex-partner believed had been in contact with others. Following the conclusion of their relationship, she reported the matter to the police. However, no charges were filed, reportedly due to the complexities surrounding claims of consent in the case. Her former partner has denied these allegations, insisting that all tattoos were applied with her explicit agreement.
With the assistance of a skilled tattoo artist, Joke is currently undergoing a comprehensive laser tattoo removal process. The artist, Han, noted that Joke was struggling with alcohol and drug addiction when she first sought help, which he suggested might be linked to the alleged abuse. Han expressed doubt regarding the claim of consent, stating that it is unreasonable to assume someone would voluntarily get tattoos near the eye, on the nose, or on the ear. He further explained that authorities were unable to pursue the case because proving non-consent legally proved difficult, leaving Joke feeling that her ex-partner's claim of her consent was an injustice.
An online fundraiser established by an organization to support her treatment has successfully raised over £26,000, surpassing its initial goal. The entire removal process is estimated to cost more than £25,000.
Joke has already witnessed substantial progress, with most of the tattoos removed from her face. She anticipates being completely free of the ink by the end of the current year. Reflecting on her ordeal, she shared a message of hope: “Someone who has been deeply hurt can rise again. If I can do it, so can someone else.”
