The Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, has revealed ambitious plans to enhance the institution’s ICT capabilities while also addressing ongoing challenges related to hostel accommodations as student enrollment continues to increase.
During the matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic year, which took place at the Main Campus Convocation Ground, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted that the University is establishing collaborations with essential agencies like Galaxy Backbone with the aim of substantially improving internet connectivity for educational purposes.
Professor Fawehinmi stated that the upgrade of ICT infrastructure is part of a continued effort initiated upon his tenure to realign the University with global academic standards and to support the academic and research requirements of students. He emphasized that a dependable digital infrastructure is crucial for effective teaching, innovation, and the advancement of knowledge within contemporary universities.
Nonetheless, the Vice-Chancellor recognized that the issue of hostel accommodation remains a significant hurdle as the University draws an increasing number of applicants from across Nigeria. He noted that over 30,000 applicants sought admission for the 2025/2026 academic session, but only around 8,000 were offered places due to limitations in facilities.
To fill the accommodation void, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the University is collaborating with relevant entities, including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and is exploring public-private partnership (PPP) projects aimed at developing more and improved hostel facilities. He reassured stakeholders that the existing hostels are under maintenance and that the safety and security of students are key priorities for the administration.
