Zamfara ramps up Ebola monitoring after febrile passenger lands at Gusau airport

Zamfara State authorities have heightened Ebola screening at Gusau airport and major motor parks after a traveller from Saudi Arabia recorded a 38 °C fever on arrival. The passenger, a Zamfara native, was sent for further medical evaluation, though no Ebola diagnosis has been confirmed yet.

The [Zamfara State Government](https://www.zamfara.gov.ng) has intensified Ebola surveillance at [Gusau airport](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gusau_Airport) and major motor parks after a traveller arriving from Saudi Arabia was found to have a body temperature of 38 °C. The individual, identified as a Zamfara indigene, was immediately referred for a detailed medical assessment, but health officials have not announced an Ebola diagnosis.

The move follows the confirmation of an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory on 20 October. Commissioner for Health Nafisa Maradun, who led a medical team to launch the screening operation, said the heightened measures are intended to prevent any spread to Zamfara. She stated, “We urge residents to stay calm and cooperate fully with health officials.”

Medical staff have been deployed not only to the airport but also to motor parks and other entry points across the state to screen travellers and enable early detection of suspected cases. The Ministry of Health has instructed both public and private health facilities, disease‑surveillance officers, and local government health authorities to boost preparedness, improve screening protocols, and promptly report any suspected infections.

The government is collaborating with the [Nigeria Customs Service](https://customs.gov.ng) and the [Nigeria Immigration Service](https://immigration.gov.ng) to reinforce surveillance at all entry points. Transport workers are also being called upon to help identify and report passengers who may require medical assessment.

These actions are part of a broader effort to contain the virus after the recent case in Abuja, ensuring that any potential introduction of Ebola into Zamfara is swiftly identified and managed.

Residents are advised to monitor their health, report any fever or related symptoms to the nearest health centre, and adhere to guidance issued by health authorities.

The coordinated response underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding public health while maintaining calm among the populace.
