Remi Surutu, a well-known Yoruba actress, has publicly declared her endorsement for President Bola Tinubu's re-election campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
She made her announcement during the launch of EKO57, a political initiative aimed at garnering public backing for the President's bid to secure a second term.
Held in Lagos on Sunday, the event was attended by various notable figures, including fellow actors such as Yomi Fash-Lanso and Adams “Lege Miami” Kehinde.
In her speech at the launch, Surutu dismissed concerns over potential backlash regarding her support for the president.
The actress noted that she has been an advocate for Tinubu since his tenure as governor of Lagos State and highlighted the criticism she has received for her stance.
Surutu remarked, “A day before the election in 2023, I was told that I was supporting the person responsible for my child's death. But I didn’t worry about that. My vote is my right, and I went out to vote the next day. Don't allow others to intimidate you. After meeting with Tinubu, I saw that he was doing well. If you think he isn't, then suggest a candidate from your family to lead for just a day, and then you'll understand the challenges.”
She continued, asserting, “I am not withdrawing my support. I will campaign for him and cast my vote. Anyone trying to intimidate us will ultimately face consequences. I am committed to this cause.”
Surutu opined that the root of many issues facing Nigeria does not lie solely with Tinubu's government but rather with the attitudes and actions of Nigerians themselves. She articulated that many challenges could have escalated into more significant crises without the president’s discreet management.
“We, Nigerians, often create our own problems. When you return home, you blame the government for what we ourselves have caused. If we cannot correct our behavior and hold ourselves accountable, we should not criticize the government,” she asserted.
Furthermore, she emphasized her loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating, “We have witnessed much disagreement within this government, but I’ve been part of the APC for many years and will continue to support it.”
In alignment with Surutu's views, Yomi Fash-Lanso expressed his support for Mr. Tinubu, emphasizing his solid performance record. Fash-Lanso shared that he was active in supporting the president during the recent presidential elections.
“The criticism of Tinubu is unwarranted. If you think he is not suitable, then propose someone from your own family who has a commendable track record,” he challenged.
He added that the surging costs of fuel and essential goods cannot be solely attributed to the president. “The production scale of our refineries has drastically fallen, and we must educate ourselves about our resources compared to other nations,” he remarked during the event.
The launch of EKO57 comes as a significant moment for supporters of President Tinubu, especially amid some Yoruba actors expressing disappointment over unfulfilled promises made by the APC in the past. While some stars have renewed their allegiance, others reflect a sense of regret regarding the party’s initiatives.
As the 2027 elections approach, it is evident that notable actors are aligning themselves with the governing party in hopes of influencing the political landscape ahead of the polls.
