Hallie Marie Tobler, aged 22 and the daughter of Jeff Johnson, a Republican candidate for governor in Minnesota, was found deceased after being stabbed in what appears to be a attempted murder-suicide. The incident prompted her father to pause his 2026 campaign abruptly.
Authorities in St. Cloud discovered Hallie with multiple stab wounds in her locked apartment after responding to an emergency call on Saturday evening, February 7, as reported by the St. Cloud Police Department.
Her husband, 23-year-old Dylan Michael Tobler, was also found critically injured at the residence, apparently due to self-inflicted stab wounds, according to police findings.
Currently in stable condition, Dylan is in police custody and is anticipated to face homicide charges related to Hallie's death once he is released from the hospital, law enforcement officials indicated.
Jeff Johnson, a former St. Cloud city councilman who initiated his campaign for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in March 2025, made the decision to suspend his campaign following the devastating loss of his daughter, as announced by the Minnesota Republican Party in a statement on Monday, February 9.
The statement expressed, "There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for Jeff and his family. The loss of a child is unimaginable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve this devastating tragedy."
In light of this tremendous loss, Johnson has opted to halt his gubernatorial campaign. The party requested that all Minnesotans support the Johnson family during this painful period.
In his campaign, Johnson focused on issues regarding crime, immigration, and fraud in Minnesota, which has recently faced increased tensions over ICE operations and confrontations between protesters and federal officers.
