Joao Victor da Silva Santos, who was formerly part of the youth setup at Brazilian Serie A club Cruzeiro, has tragically lost his life after being struck by a stray bullet. The incident occurred while he was celebrating Palma Alagoana's anniversary, a local team in Maceio, Alagoas, on January 11.
The 22-year-old had been in a coma for three weeks at a hospital in his hometown before passing away on February 3, 2026, at the Alagoas State General Hospital, where he was receiving intensive care.
Tributes have been pouring in for Joao, affectionately known as Vitao, a midfielder for Cruzeiro's Under-17 squad. Palma Alagoana released a heartfelt statement to honor him, expressing grief over the loss of the talented athlete. The club noted, "It is with great sadness that the Parma Family extends its solidarity during this profound time of mourning for Vitao. His story, hard work, and joyful spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. May God grant comfort to his family, friends, and teammates, providing them strength to endure this irreplaceable loss. Vitao may be gone, but his legacy will continue to inspire us."
Cruzeiro, recognized as one of the most celebrated football clubs in Brazil and Latin America, has not yet made a public statement on social media regarding his passing.
Joao was part of Cruzeiro's youth program from 2019 until 2021 and made 33 appearances, scoring once during his time there. His teammates included notable players like goalkeeper Otavio Costa and Vitor Roque, who is currently with Palmeiras and the Brazilian national team.
Following his youth career, Joao made his professional debut with Serie C club Sao Bernardo, although he was not actively playing at the time of his injury. Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, but local reports confirm he was struck by a stray bullet.
