Manchester United's defender, Harry Maguire, is set to face an extended suspension, ruling him out of the significant encounter with Chelsea. The Football Association (FA) has confirmed and upheld his misconduct charge for directing inappropriate language at a fourth official.
Maguire was previously sent off in a match against Bournemouth and subsequently missed the recent game against Leeds United due to an existing suspension. However, this new development means he will now serve an additional one-game ban.
The FA had earlier in the month detailed the accusation against the England international, stating, 'It is alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal.'
Reports indicate that the improper language involved swearing directed at the fourth official, identified as Matt Donohue.
Maguire's unavailability comes at an inconvenient time for Manchester United. The team is also dealing with the absence of Lisandro Martinez, who is serving a three-match suspension for violent conduct, an outcome from an incident during the Leeds United match where he pulled an opponent's ponytail.
Manchester United currently occupies third place in the league standings, holding a seven-point advantage over sixth-placed Chelsea, a gap that places them outside the qualification spots for the Champions League.
