A High Court in Kwara State has convicted a 22-year-old individual named Ishaq AbdulRazaq for the sexual abuse of a five-year-old child in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara.
The incident was reported to have taken place on July 21, 2025, in the Gaa- Odota region of Ilorin, where the accused was charged with the sexual abuse of the minor.
After reviewing the evidence presented to the court, the presiding judge determined that AbdulRazaq was guilty of the sexual exploitation of a minor, an offense that violates Section 32(2) of the Child Rights Law in Kwara State.
During the sentencing phase, AbdulRazaq's defense attorney, Dr. Bunmi Bewaji, urged the court to consider leniency, portraying the defendant as a first-time offender who has expressed remorse and is committed to rehabilitation.
Justice Oba Muritala Folorunsho ultimately sentenced the accused to a prison term of one and a half years.
The judge remarked, "This ruling serves as a clear warning to those who commit acts of child abuse and exploitation that such grievous actions will not be tolerated by the judiciary in Kwara State."
Justice Folorunsho praised law enforcement and the Ministry of Justice for their efforts to secure justice for the victim and her family. He also called on parents and guardians to be more vigilant in safeguarding children against potential predators.
Furthermore, he encouraged victims of abuse to come forward and seek assistance, emphasizing the state's commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of children.
