35 Lives Lost to Lassa Fever in Taraba

The Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo, Taraba State has reported that Lassa fever has claimed the lives of 35 individuals. A total of 226 suspected cases were admitted, with 95 confirmed positive for the virus.

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo, Taraba State has announced that 35 individuals have succumbed to Lassa fever.

Dr. Suleiman Abubakar Kirim, who is the Head of Clinical Services at the center, informed that 226 patients suspected of having Lassa fever were treated at the facility.

Following laboratory examinations, 95 individuals tested positive for the infection. Out of these, 35 have died, while 20 others have been successfully treated and discharged.

Dr. Kirim revealed that among the affected were three staff members of the center, including a doctor, a nurse, and a driver. Fortunately, the doctor and the nurse recovered, but the driver tragically passed away.

He reported that the current number of suspected infections and fatalities represents the highest figures the center has recorded in recent times.

The doctor expressed gratitude towards the Federal Government and the Taraba State Government for their assistance in managing Lassa fever cases at the facility.

Additionally, Dr. Kirim urged community members to maintain cleanliness and adopt preventive strategies to minimize contact with rodents, which are the main carriers of the Lassa fever virus.
