Aaron Ramsey, a prominent figure in Welsh football and a former Arsenal star, has officially announced his retirement from professional football. The midfielder, who is 35 years old, shared his decision on his personal Instagram page.
Ramsey is widely recognised for his extensive career, which saw him make over 250 appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal. He also represented Wales with distinction, earning 86 caps and scoring 21 goals for his country.
His most recent club engagement was with Mexican side UNAM, but his contract was mutually terminated in October last year. Prior to his move to Mexico, Ramsey had returned to his boyhood club Cardiff City and briefly served as interim manager.
In his retirement announcement, Ramsey expressed that the decision was not easy. He conveyed his gratitude to the Welsh national team, stating it was a privilege to wear the national colours and experience memorable moments. He thanked all the managers and staff who supported him throughout his international career and dedicated special appreciation to the "Red Wall" – the Welsh supporters – for their unwavering backing through both good times and bad.
Ramsey also extended his thanks to all the clubs he represented, acknowledging the managers and staff who enabled him to pursue his dream of playing at the highest level. He concluded by expressing profound gratitude to his wife, children, and family for their constant support.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) also paid tribute to Ramsey, describing him as a "world-class talent" and a vital component of the "golden generation" that achieved significant international milestones. His contributions included helping Wales qualify for three major tournaments and reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2016, where he was notably selected for the team of the tournament.
Ramsey began his professional journey at Cardiff City before his transfer to Arsenal, orchestrated by legendary manager Arsène Wenger. During his time with the Gunners, he played 369 matches, netting 64 goals. He was part of the Arsenal squad that reached the Europa League final in 2019.
Following his departure from Arsenal, Ramsey moved to Juventus, where he secured a Serie A title during his 70 appearances and six goals for the Italian club. His career also included stints with Nice, Rangers, and Cardiff, before his spell with Pumas in Mexico, culminating in his decision to retire.
