The global football authority, FIFA, has launched an investigation into the Spanish Football Federation following discriminatory chants that echoed through a recent international friendly match between Spain and Egypt. The match, which took place on March 31st at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, was marred by a segment of the crowd chanting "Whoever doesn't jump is a Muslim."
FIFA confirmed the commencement of disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish FA in a statement to AFP, citing the incidents during the friendly against Egypt. This unfortunate event marks the latest in a series of controversies that have cast a shadow over Spanish football in recent times, with players like Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior having been subjected to repeated racial abuse.
Spanish authorities have also taken notice, with police investigating the "Islamophobic and xenophobic" chants. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez publicly denounced the incident as "unacceptable" and stressed that such behaviour from a "minority" would not be permitted to damage the nation's reputation.
The Spanish Football Federation has likewise condemned the chants. Lamine Yamal, a Muslim player for Spain who participated in the match, expressed his disapproval, labelling the behaviour as a "lack of respect" from individuals who are "ignorant and racist."
