Several inhabitants of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have indicated that they are opting for more subdued Easter celebrations this year, attributing the change to prevailing economic difficulties. In separate discussions with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja, residents shared their experiences.
They conveyed that while Easter holds profound spiritual meaning, the escalating cost of everyday necessities has necessitated a reconsideration of their customary celebratory practices.
A resident of the FCT, Miss Favour Ayuba, stated that financial limitations have made it impossible for her to engage in grand celebrations. She plans to spend the holiday period at home with her extended family, focusing on rest.
"Times are tough, and I lack the funds for travel or a large celebration, so I will remain at home with my family and relax," she remarked.
Ayuba further commented that observing the "reason for the season" through church services is more valuable than participating in leisure activities that incur extra expenses.
Similarly, Miss Titilayo Alabi, who resides in Gwagwalada, mentioned that the high cost of tailoring services has prevented her from purchasing new attire for the occasion. She intends to celebrate quietly at home.
Despite financial challenges, Alabi expressed that her joy would not be diminished, emphasizing the enduring importance of Easter's spiritual dimension.
Alabi also noted that the substantial cost of transportation is discouraging visits within the city.
Another resident and civil servant, Mrs Abiemwense Moru, shared that her family had originally planned a trip for Easter but had to cancel it unexpectedly after their intended hosts altered their arrangements.
Moru suggested that the inability of numerous residents to celebrate extensively stems from the rising cost of living. She urged the government to move beyond policy announcements and ensure the effective implementation of measures designed to alleviate economic hardship.
Mrs Ese Williams, a resident of Kubwa, echoed similar sentiments, stating that she would attend church services and spend time with friends instead of travelling, primarily due to the high transportation fares. (NAN)
