Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, has issued a public admonition to actress Sarah Martins regarding her recent act of cooking on the street.
Wahab's comments came after Sarah shared a video showing her preparing meals for the less fortunate in Lagos. In a post on X, the Commissioner acknowledged her charitable intentions but emphasized that cooking in public areas is against regulations in Lagos. He pointed out that she had been previously warned against such actions last year, and stressed that she must refrain from cooking on the streets to avoid arrest and legal consequences.
His statement read:
"Dear @officialsarahmartins,
I hope this message finds you well. I have been made aware of your recent activities involving cooking and distributing food on Lagos streets.
While we recognize and are grateful for the charity and goodwill behind your efforts, such actions on public roads, walkways, or medians are not allowed according to Lagos environmental and public order laws. Engaging in cooking or trading on public infrastructure raises issues of safety, hygiene, and traffic management.
You were previously advised on this matter last year, acknowledging the intention behind your charitable act. I strongly encourage you to cease any street cooking or similar activities in public areas to avoid arrest and prosecution.
If you wish to continue your charitable endeavors, it is essential to do so through appropriate channels and in designated locations, ensuring that your efforts support those in need without breaching existing regulations and causing environmental disturbances.
We expect compliance from all individuals in Lagos, just as one would in any city with established laws.
Thank you for your understanding."
In her reaction, Sarah Martins stated that she did not cook on the road as claimed but prepared food outside the King's palace in Ajah, insisting that her actions did not create any nuisance as described by the Commissioner.
Several images related to the incident were also shared, capturing the context of her charitable actions.
