The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has made allegations against the National Assembly, claiming it is making efforts to protect individuals engaged in certificate forgery from facing prosecution prior to the next elections.
Abdullahi expressed concern over the lack of response from unions and civil society organizations regarding what he described as a troubling initiative.
During a statement on Thursday in Ilorin, he mentioned that organizations such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), various labor unions, and civil society groups have astonishingly remained silent about the situation.
He pointed out that these stakeholders have neglected to denounce this legislative action and have instead allowed the opposition to handle the matter.
"This action of the National Assembly is a direct insult to the educational development of the country," Abdullahi stated.
He emphasized that this legislative move paints Nigeria as a country overrun with certificate forgers.
Abdullahi further questioned a proposed law from the National Assembly that would prevent certificate forgery from being a valid reason to contest election results in Nigeria.
He remarked, "The struggle for Nigeria’s Independence involved numerous stakeholders cooperating during that era. It is alarming that ASUU, labor unions, student groups, and civil society organizations have placed this current issue in the hands of opposition parties."
He criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) led federal government for failing the citizens of Nigeria, which he believes is reflected in their attempts to pass laws that lack integrity as they aim to remain in power.
"The government appears indifferent to the potential harm their legislation could inflict on the nation," he added.
The ADC spokesperson accused the APC government of diminishing the nation’s ethical standards.
"How can the National Assembly declare that certificate forgery will not be a basis to challenge election results in our country?" Abdullahi questioned.
He continued by pondering the implications of such decisions for future generations, asking where ASUU, labor unions, civil society organizations, and student groups stand on these issues.
He underscored that the constitution is explicit regarding certificate forgery but lamented that the APC government seems unconcerned about this and is working to protect such offenders from penalties.
