The police in Anambra State have voiced apprehension about the presence of security personnel with masked identities who are assigned to protect very important persons (VIPs) within the state.
According to a statement released on Sunday in Awka by the police spokesperson for Anambra, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command has observed this trend with significant concern.
SP Ikenga noted that while certain security duties might necessitate tactical discretion and the concealment of identities, doing so without explicit authorisation presents considerable security risks.
He elaborated that such unchecked practices could not only endanger public safety but also erode confidence, hinder accountability, and compromise the integrity of collaborative efforts between different security agencies.
Ikenga stressed that the visibility and clear identification of security personnel are crucial elements for effective and coordinated security operations, particularly in an environment that requires seamless cooperation among various security bodies.
The absence of identifiable security details makes it challenging to confirm the legitimacy of individuals performing security functions, potentially opening avenues for criminal elements to operate under the guise of official duty.
Therefore, the police spokesperson urged all security agencies operating in Anambra State to ensure that their personnel are consistently and clearly identified whenever they are engaged in routine patrols or protective assignments.
He added that any exceptions to this identification requirement would only be permissible under specific tactical operational circumstances that have been duly authorised by the relevant authorities.
Ikenga reaffirmed the Command's commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism, ensuring accountability, and fostering public trust in the execution of their constitutional mandates.
