The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has voiced its discontent regarding the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming that the ruling party is troubled as the 2027 general elections draw near.

The ADC insists that the APC remains uneasy, even with its governance of 31 states and holding approximately 90 percent of seats in the National Assembly.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the national publicity secretary of the ADC, made these comments during a recent television discussion where he scrutinized the APC’s notable anxiety as the upcoming elections loom.

He pointed out that the APC’s extensive presence in various political realms should typically instill confidence. However, he remarked that the situation seems contrary to that expectation.

"Why is a party with 31 governors and nearly 90 percent of the National Assembly still panicking? Why are they endeavoring to destabilize other opposition entities?" he queried.

Abdullahi highlighted that this demeanor suggests an inherent doubt regarding the APC's electoral chances, notably under circumstances of a transparent and just election process.

"In any genuinely free and fair election in Nigeria today, there is no likelihood that the APC will secure victory. They ought to be preparing for a celebration of Tinubu’s triumph given their substantial control of governance. Yet, they remain anxious because they understand that in a free and fair contest, victory is improbable for them. The populace is weary of their governance," he stated.

He further characterized the APC as heavily reliant on President Bola Tinubu, cautioning that the party may find it difficult to maintain unity following his departure from power.

"If the power is extracted from the APC, the party, in truth, amounts to very little. My understanding of the party is profound. After Tinubu, they will disintegrate rapidly, likely to their own astonishment. He is the pivotal element that keeps the party unified," he remarked.

Additionally, Abdullahi referred to the APC as a "special purpose vehicle" that was created to achieve the presidencies of past leaders like Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu, noting that the party has mainly accomplished that objective.

In contrast, he revealed that the ADC is aiming to adopt a consensus model for selecting its candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

He referred to this strategy as the most economical and harmonizing solution.

"We are striving to employ a consensus model since it is the least costly for us," he said.

He added, "Ideally, generating a consensus is our most favorable scenario, and it is what we are diligently pursuing."

Abdullahi also indicated that while direct primaries are conceivable, indirect primaries are not being contemplated, adhering to the stipulations of the modified Electoral Act.
